These days, teachers find that they are burdened with so many tasks (doing clerical and admin works, running co-curriculum activities, conducting and attending meetings, entertaining visitors) and at the same they have to finish teaching the given  syllabus and ensure their students do well in the given subject in the national examination!  Wow!

Well, how about changing the we way do things? How about thinking out of the box?

How about exploiting the technology to optimize our time and teaching and at the same time optimize the learning process for students? Obviously, we all agree that the technology can’t replace teachers, and it should no bet; but it can be used to help teachers to facilitate the learning process.

Watch these videos on Learning in the 21st century

  • Can we ask the students to do some interactive exercises on their own? either using a program in CD or in the Internet? We can monitor their progress, can’t we?
  • Can we ask the students to read a particular chapter from the book  and extend a discussion about the reading in a forum  moderated by the teacher? We can trigger some questions (inquiry-based approach) so that they will think and think. Can’t we do that?
  • Can we ask them to write something in our blog so that are proud of their own writing in their teacher’s blog?
  • Can we find low level learning materials for low achievers from the Internet and let them do remedial learning on their own?
  • Can we find more challenging materials for fast learners so that they will not get bored in our classes?
  • Don’t you think that the students will benefit a lot more when they engage in learning WITH computers?  (In addition to language enrichment, how about social interaction (read Social Constructivism in learning) and ICT skills and knowledge? Don’t  you think interaacting with peers, and perhaps native speakers of English from other part of the world in a forum, would help students to learn in a more meanigful way?)
  • Don’t you think students would acquire more language inputs outside classroom when they engage in interactive learning and social networking mode conducted by teachers outside class hours? (By the way, what is the difference between language acquisition and language learning? Is language acquisition the best mode to master the language or is it language learning in the classroom?)
  • Don’t you think we can finish up our  syllabus by exploiting the technology in our teaching?
  • Can’t we teach 60% in the classroom and the other 40% we ‘teach’ differently by engaging the students in a more open and flexible learning mode, and yet we could finish the syllabus by September every year and the students will gain more than what we expected?
  • Can we run ‘gerak-gempur’ (intensive drill-n-practice) through the year instead of the last two-three months before the exam?
  • Can we do interactive ‘gerak-gempur’ rather than passive “gerak-gempur”?

If you want to master your English, you must hold to this phrase: “practice makes perfect”. Simple? Yes, for some people but for everyone. why not? The answer lies within oneself.

If you want to be proficient in English, you have to use the language everyday – reading in English (newspapers, books, comics, novels), speak English to your friends,   listen to English speeches, conversations,  and songs;  and write in English in your diary, e-mail,  e-forum, and blogs.

“Feel” the language, “internalize” the language, “think” in English, and “immerse” yourself in English by creating an English “environment” in your life.  At the same time, you can learn English on your own, practice on your own, and challenge yourself by doing language exercises continuously.  Visit some of the following websites and do some exercises. Have fun!

“S” ialah sedar atau keSEDARan.

Mari kita mulakan dulu dengan ” S”. Semua pelajar yang cemerlang seperti Siti Madihah (SPM 20 A), Siti Fatimah (SPM19 A) Noramalina (SPM 17A) dan Siti Madihah (20A) mempunyai keSedaran yang tinggi. Apa maksud sedar?

“S” ialah keSedaran.

Sedar mengapa anda dilahirkan.  Sedar apa sebenarnya wawasan atau visi hidup anda. Sedar apakah tujuan hidup ini. Sedar apakah misi hidup anda.

Ingatlah bahawa:

1. Kecemerlangan tidak berlaku secara tidak sengaja, tetapi ia dirancang

2. Kecemerlangan tidak diwarisi, tetapi diusahakan

3. Kecemerlangan bukan milik orang tertentu, tetapi milik siapa yang mahukannya.
